My 24 hours with a virtual girlfriend in China - CNN.com

My 24 hours with a virtual girlfriend in China - CNN.com

When I first came across a "virtual lover" service on e-commerce site Taobao, China's version of Amazon, I thought it was hype.
For an average of 20 yuan ($3) per day, it claimed you could hire a boyfriend or girlfriend to talk on the phone or chat online to make you feel like you're in love.
The service varies but it includes wake-up calls, text and voice messages, phone calls and goodnight wishes.
As the largest online shopping platform in China, Taobao vendors sell anything they can think of as long as it's not illegal.

DJ Dave releases single for flight victims - Nation | The Star Online

"The single,
which can be purchased as caller ringtones, is indeed a creative way to give
fellow Malaysians the opportunity to show their support and extend their
sympathies to the families of those involved in the MH17 and MH370
tragedies," he said.
The minister also said
all proceeds from the sale of the single would go to the victims' next-of-kin.
DJ Dave, whose real
name is Datuk Irwan Shah Abdullah, said he came up with the idea of composing
the song for the victims after being so moved by the two aviation tragedies
that struck the nation this year.

He said the lyrics
were written by Habsah Hassan, and the music arrangement was done by Belle Fatah.

The WTD2014 Treasure Hunt – which brings participants to places of attractions around Johor – will also take place. In addition to that, state-level celebrations will also take place in Kedah and Pahang.
Introduced in 1980 by the World Tourism Organisation, World Tourism Day is celebrated on Sept 27 every year to commemorate the contribution and importance of tourism in shaping and influencing social values, culture, politics and the world economy. The global celebration for this year will be held in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Malaysia hosted the global celebration of World Tourism Day in 2004.
To create awareness and increase participation from the public, MOTAC has launched a hashtag campaign – #MYWorldTourismDay – which encourages public to upload photos of their visits to tourist destinations in the country into their social websites to show their support for the tourism industry.

Cannabis 'addictive and causes mental health problems', 20 year study finds - Mirror Online

Cannabis 'addictive and causes mental health problems', 20 year study finds - Mirror Online

World Health
Organisation expert advisor on addiction Wayne Hall reviewed cannabis research
since 1993 and set out the effects of cannabis use on mental and physical
health.
Professor Hall, a
professor of addiction policy at King’s College London, told the Mail Online:
"If cannabis is not addictive then neither is heroin or alcohol.
"It is often
harder to get people who are dependent on cannabis through withdrawal than for
heroin – we just don’t know how to do it."
The findings found
that the adverse effects of heavy cannabis use is the
risk of developing a 'dependence syndrome'.

Around one in 10 of
all cannabis users and one in six among those who start in adolescence do
become addicted.

Affleck defends Muslims worldwide on US talk show | Showbiz | The Malay Mail Online

LOS ANGELES, Oct 7 ― Hollywood A-lister Ben
Affleck has delivered a spirited defense of Muslims worldwide on a TV talk show
hosted by a fellow liberal with little time for the Islamic faith.
Affleck, well known
for his progressive views, was promoting his latest film “Gone Girl” on HBO's
“Real Time with Bill Maher” when the conversation turned towards Islam.
“Islam at the moment
is the mother lode of bad ideas,” said fellow guest Sam Harris, a philosopher
who claimed that 20 per cent of the world's Muslims are either jihadists or
Islamists, according to “a bunch of poll results.”
Oscar-winner Affleck
recoiled at the broad-brush portrayal of the world's second-biggest faith.
“So you're saying that
Islamophobia is not a real thing,” snapped the actor, who tackled the 1979-81 Iran hostage
crisis in his 2012 political-thriller “Argo.”
“But why are you so
hostile about this?” said Maher, a left-wing comedian and atheist who shared
Harris's contempt for Islam.
“It's gross, it's
racist,” a visibly frustrated Affleck said, likening it to calling someone “a
shifty Jew.”
“How about the more
than a billion people, who aren't fanatical, who don't punish women, who just
want to go to school, have some sandwiches, pray five times a day, and don't do
any of the things that you're saying all Muslims do.”
Affleck went on to say
that “we've killed more Muslims than they've killed us, by an awful lot,” and
argued that the Islamic State group “couldn't fill a double-A ballpark in Charleston, West
Virginia
,” his wife Jennifer Garner's hometown.
Not that Maher was
swayed: He called Islam “the only religion that acts like the Mafia, that will
fucking kill you if you say the wrong thing, draw the wrong picture or write
the wrong book.”
As the Friday night
flap became a Monday morning topic of water-cooler banter, Maher stuck to his
guns, telling Salon.com: “We are not bigoted people ― on the contrary, we're
trying to stand up for the principles of liberalism.”
Asked by the online
news site if he expected Affleck, a frequent guest on his show, to get so
upset, Maher replied: “You know, I don't want to talk about this.” ―
