Boxing Day tsunami: Indonesia's miracle Mosque | MuslimVillage.com

Boxing Day tsunami: Indonesia's miracle Mosque | MuslimVillage.com

Today, Baiturrahman Mosque stands as a
testament to Aceh’s survival.
“The mosque is very, very important,” Mr
Suratin said.
“They say the mosque that is still there,
for them it is like a miracle.
“This is the first word if you communicate
with them about [it].”
He said the tragedy had shaped the area.
“The tsunami has really affected the way
[people in] Aceh face life,” he said.
“They realise the limitedness of human
beings … all you have in life can disappear in a second.
“They are the witness of this traumatic
situation … so people have a strong bond with each other with this collective
memory.”
People still going hungry in Aceh,
academic says
Despite rebuilding efforts, concern has
been raised about the effectiveness of reconstruction.
John McCarthy, associate professor at the
Crawford School of Public Policy at Australian
National University
,
said some people living in Aceh at the moment are running out of food.
“We found above 50 per cent of people were
still suffering a hunger season,” he said.
He said this occured in the area where, on
average, there had been about 10 livelihood projects per village in the
post-tsunami period.
“The donors and the NGO community had
spent about $7.5 billion on the post-tsunami intervention,” he said.
“To have such a high-profile and one of
the biggest development interventions in developing countries ever, how were
they able to achieve, from our perspective, such poor livelihood outcomes?
“We were quite surprised by that really.”
Associate Professor McCarthy said many of
the aid projects had short timelines which had contributed to the problem.
“They just had to spend as quickly as they
could. They were all competing with each other,” he said.
“I think these projects could have
achieved a lot more if they weren’t in such a rush, if they wanted to develop
longer-term partnerships, and try and think more carefully through what might
be done to alleviate this vulnerability.”
He said locals talk about “three
tsunamis”.
“The tsunami when the wave struck; the
tsunami that followed, which was the tsunami of aid money and aid agencies; and
then the third tsunami was when they all poured out,” he said.
“The Acehnese don’t blame the aid agencies
but they do see it as a lost opportunity.
“When I was there 10 years earlier [before
the tsunami], things were way, way in front of where they are now. There is no
reason why these villages along the west coast of Aceh should be as food
insecure as they are.”
In response to criticisms, Mr Suratin said
he believed life in the area had improved.
“It is incomparable. In general the
situation in Aceh is better than the situation in other parts of the country,”
he said.

Bachmann tells Obama to bomb Iran at Christmas Party - CNN.com

Outgoing Rep. Michele Bachmann had some
parting advice for President Barack Obama at the White House Christmas Party:
Bomb Iran.
The Minnesota Republican told the Washington Free Beacon in a story published Thursday
that she gave the President her two cents this week right after her family took
their picture with him at the event.
"I turned to the president and I
said, something to the effect of, 'Mr. President, you need to bomb the Iranian
nuclear facilities, because if you don't, Iran will have a nuclear weapon on
your watch and the course of world history will change,'" she said.
The congresswoman, who sought the GOP
presidential nomination in 2012, said Obama got a "condescending smile on
his face and laughed at me."

Malaysia's largest shopping mall Suria KLCC in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysian firms could find themselves economically vulnerability after gorging on cheap loans abroad. — AFP picKUALA LUMPUR, Dec 9 — Malaysia’s largest city Kuala Lumpur has the highest number of millionaires (denominated in US dollars)  surpassing all other cities of the world, according to a report by international wealth research group WealthInsight.
The city had 13,8000 millionaires or high net worth individuals (HNWIs) in 2013, higher than Abu Dhabi’s 12,500, Cape Town’s 8,753 or Birmingham’s 8,736, WealthInsight said.
The  number of millionaires concentrated in Kuala Lumpur gives an indicator of Malaysia’s fast-growing wealth at the top end but also suggests an increasing gap between the richest and the rest of the population.
Average annual income in the country stands around RM20,000 and minimum wage weighs in at RM900 a month.
WealthInsight predicted that Malaysia’s number of millionaires will jump from over 26,000 last year to 30,054 in just four years, with total Malaysian wealth also projected to increase from US$151 billion (RM527 billion) to US$206 billion (RM719 billion) in the same period.
“Malaysian wealth grew at the remarkable rate of 59.6 per cent between 2009 and 2013 and is expected to increase by a further 28% to reach US$206 billion in 2018,” said the group which claims to have a detailed database on the rich and an international-based team of over 500 economists, analysts and researchers.
WealthInsight analyst Tom Carlisle cited the well-performing Malaysian economy during the financial crisis as the reason for the 45.5 per cent hike in new millionaires minted during the 2009 to 2013 period to the total pool of 26,105.
“Since becoming an Islamic banking hub, Malaysia has seen a large surge in investment to its shores, increasing by 52.6 per cent since 2008 to US$11.6 billion. Malaysia has also seen a large increase in HNWIs acquiring their wealth in finance as well as in real estate and construction, increasing by 64.8 per cent, 57.2 per cent and 55.1 per cent respectively”, says Carlisle.
“Malaysian HNWIs are currently investing 54% of their overseas portfolio in the Asia-Pacific,” Carlisle said, adding that the Malaysian millionaires’ wealth had grew through investment in real estate which would be influenced by the high economic growth expected over the next five years.
Malaysia is also predicted to have more billionaires (20) in 2018 compared against oil-rich United Arab Emirates (19), WealthInsight said in its report titled “Millionaires in Malaysia: 26,000 and Counting”.
The leading source on the rich and ultra-rich pointed out that Malaysia’s overall wealth was similar to countries with larger populations, including Argentina’s US$160 billion, Colombia’s US$154 billion and Indonesia’s US$206 billion.
“With a population of only 28.3 million, Malaysia has a similar number of millionaires than much more densely populated countries such as Indonesia, whose population stands at 237.6 million.
“This demonstrates the big potential for billionaire growth in Malaysia,” Carlisle said.
Currently, Malaysia’s billionaires have 209 per cent more wealth than Paraguay’s entire millionaire population, with the growth of Malaysian billionaires last year standing at US$46 billion, WealthInsight said.

My 24 hours with a virtual girlfriend in China - CNN.com

My 24 hours with a virtual girlfriend in China - CNN.com

When I first came across a "virtual lover" service on e-commerce site Taobao, China's version of Amazon, I thought it was hype.
For an average of 20 yuan ($3) per day, it claimed you could hire a boyfriend or girlfriend to talk on the phone or chat online to make you feel like you're in love.
The service varies but it includes wake-up calls, text and voice messages, phone calls and goodnight wishes.
As the largest online shopping platform in China, Taobao vendors sell anything they can think of as long as it's not illegal.

DJ Dave releases single for flight victims - Nation | The Star Online

"The single,
which can be purchased as caller ringtones, is indeed a creative way to give
fellow Malaysians the opportunity to show their support and extend their
sympathies to the families of those involved in the MH17 and MH370
tragedies," he said.
The minister also said
all proceeds from the sale of the single would go to the victims' next-of-kin.
DJ Dave, whose real
name is Datuk Irwan Shah Abdullah, said he came up with the idea of composing
the song for the victims after being so moved by the two aviation tragedies
that struck the nation this year.

He said the lyrics
were written by Habsah Hassan, and the music arrangement was done by Belle Fatah.
